Volvo is significantly expanding its manufacturing footprint in China, announcing that production of its premium S90 sedan will be moving from Sweden to its plant in Daqing, China. Both regular and long-wheelbase versions of the S90 will be built in Daqing and exported globally. The S90 will be the most premium car to be made in China to date.
The automaker also announced that the midsize 60 series cars will be built at its plant in Chengdu, and the upcoming 40 series compacts will be made at a new plant in Luqiao, south of Shanghai as well as in Ghent, Belgium. Currently, the Chinese-owned Swedish automaker builds 90 and 60 series cars at its Gothenburg, Sweden, plant.
“With three plants – and the designation of one car line for each plant – Volvo creates an efficient production structure ensuring future capacity for growth,” said Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo CEO, in a statement.
The Luqiao plant is owned by Volvo’s parent, Zhejiang Geely Holdings, and will build cars for the company’s new LYNK & CO brand as well. In addition, Volvo is building a new plant near Ridgeville, S.C., to produce cars for the U.S. market as well as export. That plant is expected to open in 2018.
While it had everyone’s attention,Volvo also revealed a new higher-end version of the S90 sedan, the S90 Excellence, which is expected to make its debut at the 2016 Guangzhou Motor Show later this month.
Designed as a chauffeured vehicle, the front passenger seat has been removed and replaced with a “Lounge Console” for its pampered rear passenger. It features foldout worktables, an entertainment system, champagne cooler with crystal glasses, and a fancy footlocker.
