Volvo, Ericsson Team up to Develop Streaming Media for Driverless Cars

Recently, Volvo unveiled an autonomous car prototype with a 25-inch display screen that pops out of the dash to entertain you while the car drives itself. Now, the automaker is making sure “drivers” can sit back and stream videos easily in future driverless cars.

At the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show, Volvo announced it will partner with Ericsson to create high-bandwidth streaming capabilities for driverless vehicles. The technology is designed to provide consistent, interruption-free coverage to a growing number of vehicles demanding video service. Also, the technology can adjust the route around the driver’s video preferences.

“If you want to watch the latest episode of your favorite series, the car will know how long the journey needs to take and can optimize the route and driving control accordingly,” Anders Tylman, general manager of Volvo Monitoring & Concept Center, said in a recent statement.

Volvo’s vision for autonomous cars still involves the driver to a certain extent. With Volvo’s IntelliSafe Auto Pilot technology, drivers must pull two paddles on the steering wheel to activate autonomous driving mode. At points when autonomous driving isn’t available, the car warns drivers to take back control within 60 seconds. If the driver fails to respond, the car brings itself to a safe stop.
