Last year, Hyundai announced that the Prius-fighting Ioniq hybrid would be making its European debut at the 2016 Geneva motor show, but now, the automaker has confirmed it will also bring the EV and PHEV variants. The Hyundai Ioniq will be the world’s first vehicle platform to offer three electrified powertrains.
The Ioniq Hybrid and Plug-In will be powered by a 1.6-liter direct-injected four-cylinder engine paired with a 43-hp electric motor that’s powered by a lithium-ion polymer battery positioned under the rear seats. Total power output is 139 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Hyundai has mated the powertrain to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission to offer a more dynamic driving experience.
The Ioniq Electric will get power from a 28-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery that will deliver an estimated range of 155 miles. The EV’s electric motor delivers roughly 118 hp and 217 lb-ft. Hyundai estimates the top speed to be 103 mph.
The Ioniq Hybrid and Plug-In can be differentiated from the Ioniq Electric thanks to blue accents on the exterior and interior, while the Electric model features copper accents. Hyundai has also put together a safety package for the three Ioniq models that includes autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert, and smart cruise control.
