1 best of : Some 2016 Honda Civic Sedans Recalled Because Engine Can Seize

Honda will recall certain 2016 Civic sedans because their 2.0-liter engines can seize. The recall affects over 42,000 cars in the U.S.

The Problem: New Civic sedans equipped with the 2.0-liter engine may have a missing or improperly installed piston pin circlip. When the engine vibrates, the unsecured piston pin may move out of place and obstruct the engine cylinder wall. This problem could cause the engine to seize and suddenly lose power, increasing the risk of a crash. Or, the resulting damage to the engine block can cause oil leakage, possibly leading to a fire.

Honda has received one report of an engine fire due to the piston circlip problem. The automaker was also notified of a separate minor injury related to the issue.

The Fix: Eventually, Honda will inspect and replace the piston assemblies in Civics affected by the recall. But the necessary parts aren’t expected to become available until this summer. Honda will begin mailing letters about the recall in March, and will send another notification when parts become available later on.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: The 2016 Honda Civic recall affects an estimated 42,129 Civic sedans in the U.S. All of the affected cars come equipped with 2.0-liter engines and were produced between September 22, 2015 and February 3, 2016.
