The Honda WR-V made its world debut at the Sao Paulo auto show in Brazil this week. Created by Honda’s R&D team in Brazil, the WR-V was specifically designed for customers in South America and will start heading to local markets next year.
Honda introduced the WR-V as a “planned production model” at the show, adding that it’s a “tough and urban SUV” with plenty of cabin space and good fuel economy. According to Honda, the little SUV “accommodates various needs in the daily lives and recreational activities of customers who enjoy active lifestyles.”
The WR-V is a mini crossover based on the Fit, according to media reports. Honda didn’t announce powertrain details, but it could receive the Fit’s 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. In addition to the WR-V, Honda offers the CR-V in Brazil as well as the HR-V, which also shares a platform with the Fit. However, the new WR-V looks much more like the subcompact hatch in its overall shape and design.
“[The] introduction of this all-new WR-V is a testament to Honda’s commitment to the South American market, and we will continue to deliver more products unique to Honda that please our customers,” said Takahiro Hachigo, president and CEO of Honda, in a statement.
The WR-V stands for “Winsome Runabout Vehicle,” although we’d argue the HR-V better fits that description in terms of design. Honda will sell the new model in South American markets, with a Brazil launch planned for the first half of 2017.
