Forget celebrities; our reader paparazzi recently caught the new Alfa Romeo Stelvio compact crossover on a road test. The secret SUV was photographed with a well-masked traditional triangular grille and black tape covering its coupe-like body.
This crossover vehicle is expected to share the same rear-drive Giorgio platform that is currently being used in the Giulia sedan — reported to be a sporty, fun ride. Power will most likely come from a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6, but that has not been confirmed at this time.
This may be good news for the Italian brand, which could use a crossover champ to take on the Jaguar F-Pace and Mercedes-Benz GLC. If the new Stelvio inherits any of the pep of Alfa Romeo’s 4C, chances are it will provide a welcome sales lift for the company.
The new SUV has been confirmed to make its world debut at next month’s Los Angeles auto show. It is likely to come sporting a high-end Quadrifoglio badge like the Giulia, which debuted last year. The Stelvio will be Alfa’s first SUV. It gets its name from the Stelvio Pass in north Italy, which is the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps. (In other words, great terrain for an SUV.)
Once the crossover sheds its camo and is unwrapped for good, you can expect to hear plenty of oohing and aahing from the crowds that will surround it.
