Maserati’s new Alfieri sports coupe was originally expected to arrive this year, until Fiat Chrysler reportedly pushed that deadline back to 2018. Now, a new report claims the Maserati Alfieri isn’t expected to come out until 2020 or 2021.
According to Autocar, the Alfieri will launch after a new Granturismo and Grancabrio, which will make an appearance around 2018-2019. Although it was thought that the Alfieri coupe and convertible might take the place of a new Granturismo and Grancabrio, it looks like the new sports car will sit alongside these existing models in the Maserati lineup. Giulio Pastore, general manager of Maserati Europe, told Autocar that Maserati is still working out the details of the new Alfieri, including decisions surrounding the styling and platform. Hopefully the final product doesn’t stray too far from the design of the concept, which still looks fresh after more than two years.
“The Alfieri has been very important for Maserati,” said Giovanni Ribotta, Maserati’s exterior design boss. “The grille and much of the shape and details have influenced the Ghibli and the Levante.”
Previous reports suggested the Alfieri would receive a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine rated between 410 and 520 hp. Maserati was also considering an electric Alfieri, which would compete against Tesla.
Something that’s definitely off the table right now is a compact SUV. Pastore told Autocar that the brand isn’t looking to bring out a mini-Levante that would compete with the Porsche Macan and Range Rover Evoque.
