1 best of : 2017 Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost Achieves up to 25 MPG Highway

The Ford F-150 received some major upgrades for 2017, including a second-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine option and a 10-speed automatic transmission. Now, Ford has released EPA numbers that reveal those upgrades’ effect on fuel economy.

A two-wheel-drive 2017 Ford F-150 equipped with the 3.5 EcoBoost and 10-speed auto is rated at 18/25/21 mpg city/highway/combined, which represents gains of 1 mpg in every category over the 2016 model. The 2017 F-150 4×4 achieves 17/23/20 mpg with the same drivetrain combo, or 1 mpg better in the city and on the highway than last year’s model and up 2 mpg combined.

Those improvements come in addition to the second-generation 3.5 EcoBoost’s power gains. Thanks to a ground-up redesign, the new twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 produces 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, or 10 hp and 50 lb-ft more than the first iteration. Ford also says the 10-speed automatic, which was jointly developed by Ford and GM, is more refined and improves towing and hauling performance. In our First Drive, we found that the transmission offered smoother gear changes thanks to the additional ratios.

The 2017 Ford Raptor, which uses a high-output version of the new 3.5-liter EcoBoost and the 10-speed auto, is EPA-rated 15/18/16 mpg. Ford hasn’t announced the 10-cog transmission for any other trucks besides the 3.5-liter EcoBoost and Raptor models, but it’s possible it could eventually spread throughout the lineup. We’ve heard that the Ford Mustang might get a 10-speed option for 2018.
