Mercedes-Benz Charges Up for Formula E

Move over Audi and Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to join the Formula E racing series for the 2018/19 season.

Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E, confirmed that Mercedes has signed an agreement with an option to join the FIA Formula E Championship in season five.“We have been watching the growth of Formula E with great interest,” said Toto Wolff, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport honcho in a statement.

“Electrification will play a major role in the future of the automotive industry – racing has always been a technology R&D platform for the motor industry, and this will make Formula E very relevant in the future.”

MBM will most likely snag one of the two new team entries available when the all-electric racing series reboots its current format from two cars per driver, to one car per race. Mercedes will likely join the current teams in Formula E, which includes Audi, Renault, Citroen-DS, Mahindra, Jaguar, Faraday Future, NextEV, and Venturi.

Formula E is poised to start its third fully electric season at the Hong Kong ePrix this Sunday and ends next summer in New York.
